A court in Puri today sentenced a man to four years rigorous on charges of attempt to murder and cause grievous hurt to former Odisha Minister Maheswar Mohanty.
Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Puri, Bidhan Kumar Chand pronounced the sentence after convicting one Mahara Bhoi (34) for the murderous attack on Mohanty at a gram panchayat election meeting at Brahman Alandi village on January 30, 2012.
Mohanty, who was then the Panchayati Raj minister, was grievously injured in the incident. The accused had attacked Mohanty on his head with a crowbar from behind.
The court sentenced Bhoi to rigorous imprisonment for four years under Section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) and three years under Section 324 of IPC (causing grievous hurt). Both the sentences would run concurrently, the court said.
The court also imposed fines of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 for the two offences respectively.
The court however, acquitted another person for lack of evidence.
Police had registered a case against six persons under various sections of IPC and had subsequently arrested two persons including Bhoi.
