Bhubaneswar, Dec 26:
A total of 394 candidates remained in the fray for the January 8 Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls after 38 candidates withdrew their nominations on the last day, said sources of the state election commission (SEC), which released the final list of candidates today.
While the Commission had found 432 valid nominations, 38 candidates withdrew their nomination papers. Interestingly, two candidates have withdrawn their nominations in ward number-21, where 21 candidates had filed their nomination papers.
A total of 186 independent and other candidates, along with 141 candidates of different political parties, will contest in the BMC polls. The ruling BJD has fielded candidates in all the 67 wards while the Congress has fielded candidates in 62 and BJP in 66 wards.
Meanwhile, the SEC has called an all party meeting on Friday to discuss the model code of conduct and law and order issues. The meeting will be chaired by Khurdha district Collector at OUAT.
