Police in the southern Odisha city of Brahmapur Friday claimed to have busted an arms syndicate after arresting one of its members and recovering three firearms and 11 rounds of ammunition from him.
SP Brahmapur Sarthak Sarangi told reporters that three revolvers and 11 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the house of one Ashok Kumar Sahu of Routpeta Sahi, Aska Road in the town during a raid on his house.
The SP said besides the seizure of firearms, cash around Rs 5.35 lakh was also seized from Sahu’s house.
“During our investigations, we have come to know that the arms syndicate was being funded by gambling dens and liquor traders of the town. We are trying to arrest other members of the syndicate and recover more arms,” Sarangi said.
The accused, Sahu (37) was a gambler and he also provided money to other gamblers at the gambling point at high interest.
“They procure these firearms from Kolkata and Munger in Bihar and sell them in the town,” the SP stated.
While the cost of one revolver was in between Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000, the price of a pistol was around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000, he said.
