Rourkela, Sep 24:
Three persons – the husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law – of a deceased woman were arrested and forwarded to court by police in Odisha’s steel city of Rourkela on Wednesday afternoon on charges of dowry death.
The body of the deceased woman was reportedly found hanging in her bedroom late on Tuesday evening. Based on an FIR lodged at the Plant site police station by the father of the deceased girl on Wednesday alleging that his daughter had been tortured and killed for dowry, police arrested the husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law of the deceased woman.
Sources said Pratima Mandal (32), daughter of Ganesh Mandal, a resident of Chakradharpur town in Jhakrhand, had married Padma Lochan Mandal, son of Ratikanta Mandal, resident of B/129, Sector 21 in the Steel Township area of the city. Padma Lochan works as a loco driver in Indian Railway at Bondamunda here. In his FIR, Ganesh mentioned that at the time marriage, as per the dowry demand of his son-in-law’s family, he had given cash of Rs. 1.5 lakh, household appliances like washing machine and refrigerator, besides gold ornaments weighing about 50 grams.
“But after three months of marriage, the family members of his son in-law started torturing my daughter, demanding another two lakh rupees, following which I had paid about one lakh rupees more in three/four installments,” Ganesh mentioned in his FIR. He also claimed that during that time, he had also lodged a complaint in local Mahila police station, but the police officials had not initiated any action in his case.
“However, an understanding between two families had taken place in presence of senior family members of both the families. The family members of my son in-law had agreed not to torture my daughter, following which I had sent my daughter to her in-laws’ family,” Ganesh mentioned in his FIR.
He, however, said the torture of his daughter continued. “On Tuesday evening, at about 7 PM, my wife received a phone call from our son in-law, who rebuked her in filthy language,” Ganesh mentioned in his FIR. “He told my wife to take back my daughter or risk facing serious consequences,” Ganesh added. “About two hours after that phone call, we received another call that our daughter had hanged herself and become serious and was being rushed to hospital,” he mentioned.
“On my request, my brother in-law, who stays at Rourkel,a had rushed to the hospital and came to know that the body of our daughter had been kept in morgue house since she had already died before reaching the hospital,” he added.
