Bhubaneswar, Dec 14:
In a bid to ensure the safety and security of women commuters in the city, the commissionerate police is all set to introduce 200 women-only auto-rickshaws soon.
The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Twin City Commissioner Dr RP Sharma at the Commissionerate headquarters on Friday evening. A large number of auto-rickshaw owners and drivers attended the meeting, a press release from the Commissionerate police said today.
It was decided to run 200 auto-rickshaws exclusively for women in the first phase. The colour of these autorickshaws will be pink (border) and they will be numbered serially up to 200 (like pink 1, 2, 3, 4).
These special autos will be available at the Bhubaneswar airport, railway station and near women’s colleges. The owners of the vehicle were asked to recommend the names of their drivers, who will run the autos, to the commissionerate police by December 20. Psychological studies will be conducted on them by the police before giving them the go-ahead, the release said.
Three women passengers can travel on the rear seat of these special vehicles, the release added.
