Balugaon, Aug 14
Two persons of Borigaon village under Banpur police limits in Khurda district have died and more than twenty others from the same village admitted to hospitals after allegedly consuming spurious country liquor.
As per reports, one Dunia Nayak (40) of Borigaon fell unconscious a few steps away from his farmland last Friday after reportedly consuming liquor bought from one Batu Nayak. Family members and fellow villagers admitted him to Banpur Hospital, where he died Saturday morning after vomiting repeatedly. He also felt unbearable pain in the chest, eyewitnesses said.
Dunia’s younger brother Bulu Nayak (28), who had also consumed liquor sold by Batu Nayak, was admitted to Banpur Hospital on Monday after he suffered from diarrhoea and pain in his chest. Bulu died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar where he was shifted after his condition worsened. Commissionerate police has conducted post-mortem on the body.
While one Babu Lenka (30) of the same village lost his sight after consuming liquor from the same vendor, about 20 persons have been admitted to different hospitals in Berhampur and Bhubaneswar.
Banpur police has detained the liquor vendor Butu Nayak and his wife and is keeping a close watch on the situation.
Political leaders are making a beeline to the village to offer their condolences to the bereaved family. The opposition while condemning the incident has held the local MLA responsible for the tragedy.
