Forest department officials today arrested and sent to jail 19 fishermen for allegedly fishing along the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.
Four fishing trawlers used by the fishermen have been also seized by the patrolling unit of the Forest department near Ekakulanasi.
Gahirmatha marine sanctuary is a prohibited breeding zone of the endangered olive ridley sea turtles.
Forest department officials said the arrested fishermen were natives of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara district.
They were arrested and sent to jail under section 27 & 29 of the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982, the officials added.
