170 pieces of monitor lizard skin seized

Dhenkanal, Feb 14:

Forest department officials on Thursday seized around 170 pieces of land monitor lizard skin from Joranda in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.

The skin of land monitor lizards, an endangered species, are used for making a local musical instrument known as “khanjani”, said the official.

Divisional Forest Officer, Pradipta Kumar Sahu said 170 pieces of skin of the reptile were seized from from a makeshift shop at the Joranda Mela on Thursday.

Sahu however, said the shop owner was absconding.
