Rayagada, Dec 19:
A young farmer from Rayagada district of Odisha, who had been struggling for life in hospital since Thursday, last night breathed his last. The 16 year old had consumed poison allegedly due to loan and crop loss.
The minor, identified as Ramadas Kalka, was a resident of Kodingiguda village under Halua panchayat. He had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from a local money lender for farming.
The loan became a burden for him as jute crop on his four-acre land was destroyed due to poor rain. Distressed, young Kalka consumed pesticide on Thursday and was rushed to Rayagada district headquarters hospital.
Later, he was shifted to Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital of Berhampur after his condition deteriorated, sources said.
But, Kalka could not be saved and he died last night at the government hospital.
Meanwhile, in a related incident, two more farmers breathed their last at MKCG hospital today. They have been identified as Prasanna Sahu of Aska and Ghanashyam Dora of Chadhayapada in Ganjam district. Both had consumed pesticides on December 15 and 17 respectively allegedly due to crop loss and loan burden.
