Cuttack, Jun 12:
Apprehending that their minor daughter could elope with the man of her choice, the family members of a girl were allegedly getting her married against her wishes to a man who is 23 years older to her. However, the girl was rescued by the police and officials of child rights bodies.
The 15-year-old girl studying in Plus II second year at Rajabagicha City College here was said to be in a relationship with a young man.
The family members of the girl, the youngest sibling among three sisters and a brother, sensed that she might elope with him and cause embarrassment to them.
After the death of her father, the girl was being looked after by her mother, brother and paternal uncle, who were apparently not happy with the girl’s choice and had arranged her alliance with 38-year-old Abhimanyu Das from Choudwar on the outskirts of the city.
Before the marriage could be solemnized, officials of Childline, Cuttack District Legal Services Authority and police reached the minor girl’s house at Badhei Sahi in Rajabagicha area and verified the testimonials related to her age. The age of the girl was found to be 15 years, 11 months and three days.
Following this, a complaint was lodged at the Puri Ghat police station and the guardians of the girl—mother, brother and uncle– were summoned to appear before it.
They were allowed to leave after the trio submitted a written undertaking that they would allow the girl to continue her studies, won’t inflict any physical or mental torture and would not force her to marry before attaining the legal marriageable age or against her wishes.
