Bhubaneswar, Dec 12:
In a joint raid by the enforcement squads of Bhubaneswar and Jatni headed by the assistant Collector, Bhubaneswar Sadashiv Nayak, 15 trucks carrying illegal house construction materials illegally from Janla and Mendhasala areas were seized on Thursday.
Nayak, along with Tehsildar of Jatni Bijay Kumar Swain and Bhubaneswar Tehsildar Chinmaya Acharya, supervised the raid.
Acting on a tip-off, the squad conducted a surprise raid and seized the three trucks laden with construction material like sand, moram, stone chips from Janla area, besides 12 trucks from Mendhasala area located on the outskirts of the city. The house materials were concealed under tarpaulin sheets in these 15 trucks to avoid detection at check-posts en route to the destination, said police sources.
Later, the enforcement team handed over the seized trucks to the respective local police stations coming under their jurisdiction for further action against their owners.
Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Chandaka police station Gangadhar Dalai pleaded ignorance about the quantity of materials loaded in each truck saying police stations don’t have any measuring instruments. It is for the enforcement team to measure the seized goods, the IIC said.
The drivers of 11 of the trucks seized in Mendhasala were arrested and forwarded to the local court here while one managed to slip away during the raid, Dalai added.
Police sources said the sand was quarried illegally from Janla and Mendhasala region in Khurda district and was being transported without due permit and requisite challan.
