There are as many as 141 crorepatis- including 43 from the BJD- among the 747 candidates contesting in 77 constituencies in the second phase of Odisha State Assembly Elections 2014. a report by the Odisha Election Watch (OEW) revealed today.
Informing this at a press briefing here this morning, Ranjan Mohanty of the Odisha Election Watch said, of these 141 crorepatis 43 are from the BJD, 34 from the Congress (INC) and 17 from BJP.
Former Congress leader and now an independent candidate in the Champua Assembly constituency in Keonjhar district Sanatan Mahakud is the richest candidate with assets worth Rs 69.63 crore.
The OEW analysis based entirely on the information furnished by candidates in their affidavits, revealed that there are criminal cases pending against 186 candidates in several police stations. Of them, 114 candidates have serious criminal charges against them.
Those who have criminal charges against them include 39 candidates of the Congress, 25 of the ruling BJD, 34 of the BJP and 9 of the Aam Admi Party (AAP).
