The pregnant woman, identified as Mami Adhikari of Bada Brahmansahi of Patrapur, was allegedly kicked by the IIC of Jarada Police Station Krushna Prasad Das while conducting a raid at her residence on October 25 at around 1 am. The woman was grievously hurt in the incident and delivered a stillborn baby on Sunday.

Hundreds of villagers from Patrapur, including the family members of Mami Adhikari, met southern range DIG Amitav Thakur yesterday at Brahmapur and apprised him of the barbaric atrocity committed by the IIC of Jarada on the woman.

The victim has claimed that the unborn child in her womb had died due to the kicks showered on her by the IIC. They submitted a medical report in support of their claim. The villagers demanded a thorough probe into the incident and sought justice for the victim.

DIG Thakur has asked Brahmapur SP Sarthak Sarangi and HRPC DSP to conduct a probe into the incident and submit a report within three days.

“I have ordered an inquiry into the incident and have asked them to file a report within three days. As per my information, she was not beaten up by the IIC but sustained injuries in the scuffle,” Thakur had said yesterday while speaking to the media.

Meanwhile, the DSP (HRPC) today visited Patrapur and recorded the statement of the victim and inquired at the hospital where the victim had undergone treatment after the incident. He recorded the statements of hospital staff and collected a copy of the patient record available with them.

In a memorandum submitted by the victim’s family, it has been stated that  Mami was pregnant for nine months at the time of the incident. They have stated that IIC Jarada Krushna Prasad Das and his staff knocked on the doors of Mami at the unearthly hour of 1 am on October 25.

While Mami was trying to open the door, IIC Das allegedly lobbed a heavy kick on Mami, who fell down on the ground with a thud. After enduring severe pain in her womb all night, Mami got admitted at the Patrapur hospital at daybreak.

On the advice of the gynaecologist there, Mami went for an ultra-sonograph. On examining the report of the ultra-sonologist, the gynaecologist told her that the condition of the baby in her womb was bad. She was referred to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur for advanced treatment. She delivered a still born baby on Sunday.

Mami has alleged that it was the IIC’s kick that was responsible for her baby’s death. She has further alleged that the IIC’s action was prompted by political vendetta.

It may be mentioned here that during the general elections, IIC Das had been transferred on the basis of complaints by different political parties. He was reinstated in Jarada police station after the elections.
