Narasinghpur, Dec 12:
A youth died at SCB Medical College and Hospital last night after being allegedly thrashed by cops while he was under police custody at Narasinghpur in Odisha’s Cuttack district.
The deceased was identified as Akul Senapati, a resident of Malisahi village under Narasinghpur police station.
According to reports, Senapati had an exchange of words with a woman of the village over grazing of paddy by cattle in crop field. He was detained at Narasinghpur police station on December 9 for questioning in connection with the incident after the woman lodged a complaint.
However, he was admitted to Narasinghpur community health centre and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital as his condition became critical while he was under police custody.
He took his last breath at ICU of SCB Hospital last night while undergoing treatment.
The family members of the deceased have alleged that Senapati was picked up by cops from his house to police station and was thrashed by policemen which led to his death.
Rejecting the allegations of Senapati’s kin, SP, Cuttack (Rural) Madhab Chandra Sahoo said a woman of the village had lodged a complaint against Senapati on December 6 stating that he attacked her following which she sustained injuries. As Senapati didn’t cooperate in investigation, a police team had raided his house on December 9. Senapati attacked the cops in which Assistant Sub-inspector Bhagaban Sahoo was injured, the official said.
As Senapati’s condition was not good, he was admitted to Narasinghpur community health centre and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital by police as per the advice of doctor. His family members were informed about the incident but no one turned up to hospital, Sahoo added.
The SP also ordered for a probe into the incident. A DSP rank official will investigate into the matter.
Later in the day, kin of the deceased lodged an FIR against Narasinghpur IIC at Mangalabag police station in Cuttack.
