A year and half after it got the coveted ‘international’ tag, the Biju Patnaik International Airport here host the first international flight on the morning of July 10, connecting Odisha to the world in the process.
The flight schedule for the first ever international flight from the Airport has been finalized. The Dubai bound Air India plane will take off from Bhubaneswar on July 10 at 2 PM.
As per information provided by airport authorities, the Air India plane will operate on a hub and spoke model that will ferry passengers to New Delhi and then to Dubai and vice versa.
Air India AI-873 will leave New Delhi for Bhubaneswar at morning 7:05 AM and land here at 9:05 AM. The plane number will change to AI-077 after leaving Delhi and it will be classified as a hub and spoke place as it will contain both domestic and international passengers.
It will depart from Bhubaneswar at 2 PM and land at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport at 4:25 PM. The plane number would again change here from AI-874 to AI-078. The Dubai bound passengers will be ferried via New Delhi at 8:30 PM.
The Bhubaneswar bound passengers will be ferried via New Delhi on the return flight. The plane will reach New Delhi at 4:50 AM and leave for Bhubaneswar at 7:05 AM.
International passengers can now do their customs and immigration checks at Bhubaneswar, Airport director Sharad Kumar said.
The customs and immigration documents of the overseas passengers would be checked at the T2 Terminal while the domestic passengers would be taken to T1 Terminal in a luxury bus.
The Bhubaneswar-New Delhi flight A1874 will leave from Biju Patnaik International Airport for New Delhi at 2 PM as A1078 international flight after carrying the overseas passengers from T2 Terminal.
After commencement of the international flight, the overseas passengers from other countries flying via New Delhi will get their custom and immigration documents checked in Bhubaneswar instead of New Delhi.
Similarly, passengers flying from Bhubaneswar to other countries via New Delhi can also have their documents checked at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, the Air India authorities have informed.
The trial run for international flights to Odisha’s Biju Patnaik International Airport will start on July 8, two days before the actual international operations takes off.
The 6264 Square-meter terminal-2 of the airport has been specially equipped for international operations. This new terminal can handle 400 passengers every hour and 1,80,000 passengers a year. While the new terminal has been completely digitized, six custom clearance counters and three conveyor belts have also been set up.
The interior has been well decorated with traditional Odia art, tribal art and Chanduas made in Pipli. Flight Information Display System (FIDS) has been set up for passenger convenience and the entire terminal has been kept under CCTV surveillance for added security.
Besides, steel barricades have been erected in front of the ticket counter and adequate parking arrangements have also been made in the parking lot outside the airport. It can accommodate 300 cars, 45 taxis and six buses at the moment.
