The Sadar police yesterday detained four members of a family in connection with the alleged murder of Puspalata Mahapatra whose decomposed body was recovered on Thursday.
The detainees have been identified as father-in-law Suranjan Bagudai (64), mother –in-law Manjulata Bagudai (56), sister-in-law and her daughter.
However, the prime accused in the case Bijay Krushna Bagudai (28) is absconding with his 3-year-old son.
The incident came to light on Thursday after a foul stench emanated from the backyard of Suranjan’s house in Harida village. Following information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the decomposed body of Puspalata from the backyard in presence of a magistrate and local tehsildar Pinaki Patnaik.
Police also recovered a dagger hidden under the earth.
The body, bearing cut marks around the neck, was later sent to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
Investigation revealed that the in-law members had dumped the body of Puspalata inside the backyard of their house after killing her on Sunday.
Later, Suranjan informed the police about his missing daughter-in-law.
After being confirmed that the in-laws had killed Puspalata, about 1000 people from nearby villages ransacked Suranjan’s house and blocked the road near Kuruda for several hours demanding immediate arrest of the victim’s husband.
IIC of Sadar police station Jaswant Samal said that the police has registered a case of murder and dowry torture case and is on the lookout for the absconding husband.
According to police, Puspalata, daughter of Kailash Mohapatra of Sribantapur village had married Bijay Krushna in a temple in 2006.
Soon after the marriage, she was being mentally and physically tortured by her in-law members demanding more dowry.
