Amorous wild elephant strays into Odisha zoo, creates panic

A wild pachyderm kept the Nandankanan zoo officials on their toes after breaking into the zoological park on Wednesday and attacking three other elephants inside the wildlife safari.

Eyewitnesses said the tusker sneaked into the zoo from the adjacent Chandaka sanctuary forcing the authorities to prevent the entry of visitors to the zoo for the better half of the day.

A flush out operation was launched to drive away the rogue elephant. However, the officials said there was no threat to the visitors as forest officials were deployed to avert any mishap.

“We launched an operation to drive out the elephant from the safari and managed to do so in two and half hours. During the operation, we took utmost care that other captive elephants are not hurt by the wild elephant. Though the elephant is still in the zoo area, we expect it to leave the territory by tonight,” Deputy Director of Nandankanan Zoological Park Jayant Dash said.

The tusker is believed to have strayed into the elephant sanctuary after being besotted by Hira, a female elephant in the sanctuary,
