Bhubaneswar, Aug 29:
In protest against the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government’s ban on ’84-Kosi Parikrama Yatra’ in Ayodhya called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bhubaneswar district unit of VHP on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan here and submitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee through the Governor urging him to intervene in the matter to ensure that the yatra goes ahead.
“The UP Government has no right to curtail anybody’s religious right. What the UP Government has done by arresting the frontline leaders of VHP is totally illegal. We have urged the President to ensure a smooth ’84-Kosi Parikrama Yatra’ in Ayodhya,” said Bhubaneswar district VHP unit president Prafulla Chandra Mishra.
To foil the controversial yatra, the UP police on Sunday arrested over 1,700 people including senior VHP leaders Pravin Togadia and Ashok Singhal.
Starting on Sunday, the ‘Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama Yatra’ was scheduled to have lasted till September 13 crossing six districts of Uttar Pradesh.
The 84 Kosi Yatra is a tradition that has been there for thousands of years with the belief that it gives deliverance to the performer from the cycle of 84-Lakh Yonis (the cycle of birth and death).
