Bhubaneswar, Jan 28:
CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat today said the rights on the mineral resources in the state should be vested in tribals for their development.
“Odisha is a mineral rich state. But, the corporates are looting the mineral resources in the name of industrialization. While the mineral resources are found in the 5th schedule areas of the state, where tribals are residing, the development of tribals is ignored. So, we demand that rights on mineral resources, forests, land and water should be vested in tribals,” said Karat addressing a rally of Adivasi Adikar Rashtriya Manch at PMG square here.
Referring to the Shah Commission’s report on illegal mining, which has indicted the state and Central governments, she said that while the minerals were looted by the miners; it has neither benefited the state nor the common man, including tribals.
Maintaining that the Posco project is against the interest of state, the CPM leader said both the governments are trying to set up the project in a fragmented manner and the Centre is giving phase wise clearances to work around the agitation by the local people.
Karat termed rejection of Vedanta’s proposal to mine the Niyamigir hills a ‘victory’ of tribals.
