Bhubaneswar, Jul 25:
Tension ran high at the Utkal University campus in the Odisha Capital after unidentified miscreants made a murderous assault on two students.
The two students, inmates of the Gopabandhu Men’s Hostel were grievously injured in the attack and ave been admitted to hospital.
The injured students have been identified as Ashok Nayak, first year student in Library Science, and Mahesh Prasad, first year student in History. After the attack, the injured were admitted to Apollo Hospital here and the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.
Three persons have been detained for interrogation in connection with the case, informed Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.
As a fall-out of the murderous attack on the two students, traffic came to a standstill at Vani Vihar square here with all major roads – Vani Vihar square to Master Canteen, Rasulgarh square to Acharya Vihar on the busy National Highway No 5 and all exit points – blocked by angry students by placing burning tyres on the road. Commuters passing through these routes had a torrid time as the students laid siege to the roads.
Utkal University Students’ Union president Rajeshraj Swain said some unidentified non-students attacked two hostel inmates near the University canteen with sharp weapons while they were returning to their hostel this afternoon.
“Tension prevails in the campus since yesterday and police was deployed to maintain law and order. Despite this, non-students entered the university premises and attacked our students. This is the inefficiency of the police and we demand the immediate arrest of the culprits within half an hour. Otherwise, we will intensify our agitation,” warned Swain.
DCP Satyabrata Bhoi and IIC Saheed Nagar police station have been monitoring the situation to bring it under control.
Earlier in the day police had done a flag march in the varsity campus.
