One woman set on fire by in-laws, another stabbed by hubby

In an shocking incident of dowry torture, a mother-in-law allegedly set her 30-year-old daughter-in-law on fire in the Unit-3 area under Kharvel Nagar police limits here on Sunday.

The victim identified as Neelam Biswal who hails from Deogarh district was later rescued by her neighbours and rushed to Capital Hospital with severe burn injuries. She was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack in a critical condition.

Neelam was married to Raghukula Tilak Biwal of Unit-3 two years ago but was subjected to regular torture by her mother-in-law Arati Biswal “because her family failed to meet her undue demands for more dowry and cash”, her neighbours said.

Only six months ago Neelam’s parents had coughed up Rs 2 lakh in cash but that did not satisfy her mother-in-law’s greed.

“Four days ago, she had called to say her mother in law had turned more violent and torturing her.I asked her to lodge a complaint with police but she refused to do so for the sake of her father who has suffering from a cardiac problem,” her friend and neighbour Reena Rani Sahu told OST.

“We heard her scream this afternoon and found Neelam in flames. We tried to douse the fire and rushed her to the hospital. She told us her mother-in-law had poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze” Reena added.

The city Mahila police has detained Arati and her husband Raghukula for interrogation after initiating investigation into the matter

Woman stabbed by husband 

25 year old Suni Behera of Bharatpur is battling for life after she was stabbed repeatedly with a knife by her 35-year-old husband Santosh on Sunday morning, Khandagiri police said.

The accused Santosh Behera is still at large after the incident.

She was rushed to the Capital Hospital and later, shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.

Khandagiri police said the hunt is on to nab the culprit.
