Bhubaneswar, Feb 22:
The Commissionerate police rescued two women Gaon Sathis while they attempted self-immolation in front of Naveen Niwas here today.
The duo, who sustained minor burn injuries, were rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the two women Gaon Sathis— Pratima Barik and Minarani Maharana— had earlier threatened self-immolation in front of Naveen Niwas, residence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik today if the state government failed to meet their demands.
But as there was no response from the government, the duo arrived in front of Naveen Niwas and tried self-immolation by pouring kerosene on their bodies. But the security personnel on duty rushed to the spot in time and rescued them.
The two women, who sustained minor burn injuries, were rushed to the Capital Hospital where their condition was stated to be ‘out of danger’.
It may be mentioned that the Gaon Sathis have been on an indefinite protest since the start of the interim budget session of the State Assembly.
The demands of the Gaon Sathis include job regularization, permanent appointment in their respective panchayats with a monthly incentive of Rs 4,500, abolition of the five-member village coordinator panel and employment for 200 days a year to the job-card holders instead of the present 100 days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
