The deceased identified as Dharmudhar Ada hailing from Khirmal village under Boden block in Nuapada district committed suicide allegedly by consuming poison in his field. Ada had grown cotton in his fields and had taken loans to the tune of Rs 40,000 for this purpose.  With crops damaged and prospect of repaying loans remote, Ada was under tremendous mental pressure and allegedly ended his life by consuming poison.

Similarly, another farmer Magsir Majhi hailing from Tukula village under Bhatli block in Bargarh district also allegedly committed suicide today after his paddy crop was ruined.

Notably, on Sunday one Abhimanyu Baliarsingh from Brajasundarpur village under Bolagarh block in Khurda district had taken the extreme step by consuming poison due to bad crops and unable to bear the burden of loans. Abhimanyu had gone missing from the previous night and was spotted unconscious in his field on Sunday. His family members had rushed him to Khurda district headquarters hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Similarly, while on Saturday two farmers– Bhakta Dharua from Patnagarh sub-division of Bolangir district and Sanatan Mirdha from Jharjhari under Jujumara police limits in Sambalpur– had committed suicide due to crop loss and subsequent financial burden, another farmer named Hiralal Sahu from Bargarh district had committed suicide on Friday.

Aama Odisha President Soumya Ranjan Patnaik yesterday visited Bolagarh and visited the family members of the deceased farmer—Abhimanyu Baliarsingh– who committed suicide by consuming poison.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Prasad Harichandan also visited the farmer’s village to express solidarity with the bereaved members. Prasad demanded for a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of the kind of the deceased.
