The farmer suicides in Odisha continue unabated with two more deaths being reported from Nabarangpur and Balangir today.
The deceased have been identified as Bhaga Paika of Purunapaniguda village of Nabarangpur district and Arakhit Majhi of Ghunsara village of Balangir district .
Paika had borrowed Rs 50,000 as loan for farming this year, but, he was unable to repay the loans due to crop loss because of poor rains. Distressed, Paika hanged himself from a Banyan tree.
While, Arakhit Majhi of Ghunsara village in Balangir district under similar circumstances had consumed pesticide on Tuesday. He was admitted in a serious condition to Balangir hospital where he died today.
Yesterday, four distressed farmers had committed suicide with two in Bolangir district, while one each died in Keojahar and Baleswar districts of the state.
Krutibash Gahir of Ramud village under Tureikela block Sub-divisional hospital at Patnagarh died , while another farmer, Parikhita Nag of Batharala village under Sindhikela police limits in the district succumbed to his suicide attempt while undergoing treatment at the Mission Hospital in Khariar.
Desha Dewari of Bhaliadehi village in Keojhar committed suicide distressed by failure of crops in 1.5 acre of his own land and 2 acre on sharecropping. He was worried about the repayment of Rs 25 thousand loans from Bank of India Keojhar Branch last year.
Purna Chandra a 55 year’s old farmer from Kahtabania village in Remuda block Baleswar, had taken Rs 1.5 lakh loan, after crop failure he was very worried about loan repayment and depressed he committed suicide.
Notably, more than 50 farmers have already died in the state due to crop loss and loan burden.
