A total of 2, 02,082 cases are pending in the Odisha High Court till date, Law Minister Arun Sahu informed the Assembly today.
Replying to a question by BJP MLA Dillip Ray in the State Assembly on Tuesday, Sahu said of the total number of pending cases, 36,358 are criminal cases and 1, 65,724 civil cases.
The Minister said 10, 70,377 cases – 8, 25,082 criminal cases and 2, 45,295 civil cases – are pending in the lower courts of the State.
As many as 83,962 of the pending cases in the High Court and 3, 96,174 in the lower courts have been pending for more than five years, he added.
The Law minister informed the House that 20 judges have been appointed against the sanctioned strength of 27 judges in the High Court, while 121 posts are lying vacant against the sanctioned strength of 690 judges in the lower courts in the State.
The State Government has taken steps to set up courts in the State for speedy disposal of cases, Sahu said.
