Bhubaneswar, Jul 31:
Veterinary doctors at Odisha’s Nandankanan zoo have found out that Lioness Radha had four foetuses in her womb out of which two had died in her womb.
The dead foetuses were found after she was taken to the veterinary ICU of the zoo following a prolonged illness after her delivery. The 10-year old lioness had given birth to two cubs on July 23 of which one died two days after birth.
Her womb was washed to flush out the dead foetuses as recommended by the experts of the technical committee and she was administered antibiotics. She is recovering well, said zoo sources.
The incident, however, has turned out to be a matter of immense sadness for the zoo workers, who had been consistently taking care of Radha during her pregnancy.
The vets are now trying their best to keep the only living female cub of Radha alive. It is still in the zoo clinic and special care is being taken to ensure it doesn’t catch any infection or deadly disease.
It may be noted that it was the first delivery of lion cubs in the zoo after 10 long years. After the death of a cub, the total number of lions in the zoo has come down to 11.
