According to reports, Mitu Rout and his associates were planning a dacoity near Dobandha village of Kerandipur panchayat at about 4.20 pm.
In the meanwhile, Niranjan Mohapatra, a brick kiln owner of Hatadobandha village was passing by the road.
Seeing him, Mitu and his associates demanded Rs 20,000 extortion money from his possession. But as he refused to oblige, they attacked him with sharp weapons and country bombs.
Mohapatra was later rushed to the district headquarters and hospital at Puri.
Though a complaint was lodged with the Chandanpur police station, there was no action by the police.
In the evening, Mitu and his associates attacked Sanjay Jena and his aunt of Paridobandha village with sharp weapons and bombs while they were on the way in a bike.
As Jena was grievously injured, the dacoits fled the area.
Following information, the villagers lodged a complaint with the police.
Later, a team of police of Chandanpur police station led by ASI Prahllad Patra, constable Tapan Pradhan, home guard Sanatan Baral and OSAP jawan Jitendra Lenka and an ASI rushed to the spot and nabbed Chagala alias Dipti Ranjan Sethi of Brahmagiri area.
However, as the irate villagers tried to take away Sethi from the police, a tussle ensued.
Following information, Chandanpur IIC Girija Patnaik rushed to the spot.
As he was trying to pacify the villagers, the dacoits present on the spot, threw two country bombs in which the IIC, constable and the OSAP jawans and Debasis Mohapatra of Kama Sasan village were injured and rushed to the district headquarters hospital.
The IIC Patnaik had to be transferred to a hospital in Bhubaneswar after his condition became critical.
Following the incident, Puri SP Anup Sahu and other senior police officials rushed to the hospital and met the injured policemen and the villager.
Meanwhile, acting on the information of Chagala, efforts are on to nab Mitu and Dhadu Mohapatra of Naudikera village, police said.
