Bhubaneswar, Apr 8:
The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday placed two constables under suspension following an inquiry conducted by an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ACP) into Monday’s ugly incident in which five journalists were brutally assaulted by cops.
Bikash Kumar Nayak and Pramod Kumar Samal of the Traffic police station, Bhubaneswar were suspended for their acts of indiscipline and conduct unbecoming of a policeman, sources in the Commisionerate Police said.
The inquiry into the incident was ordered by the twin city Commissioner of Police Dr R P Sharma late last night who promised quick action after the angry journalists blocked the traffic at AG Square protesting the assault on theircolleagues by the two constables. Dr Sharma ordered the probe after he had a discussion with some editors of some newspapers and news channels.
The road blockade by angry journalists, which started around 7 pm on Monday evening, had continued well past midnight.
The incident started with an altercation between the journalists and the cops after a reporter and a photojournalist were stopped by two policeman as they were crossing the road.
When the journalists confronted the two policemen over the reason for stopping them, they turned abusive. They were later joined by a group of seven policemen who allegedly thrashed the two journalists concerned. They did not spare three other journalists who sought to come to the rescue of their colleagues either.
The five journalists were injured while a costly camera and a mobile phone were damaged in the concerted assault by the policemen.
