The special squad of the Commissionerate Police with the help of the Chandrasekharpur police arrested two persons including a ‘hardcore criminal’ today for possessing illegal fire-arms.
They have been booked under section 25 Arms Act and will be forwarded to a local court today.
The accused have been identified as Biswanath Swain alias Bisia (32) of Magurakuda under Niali police station in Cuttack, who presently stays at Saileshree Vihar and his associate Dillip Panda (34) of Purusottampur under Soro Police station in Baleswar district, who stays in the Adimata Colony in Saheed Nagar here.
Briefing mediapersons here, the twin city commissioner of police (CP) Dr RP Sharma the police team apprehended the duo from Chandrasekharpur area on the basis of reliable inputs that they were in possession of illegal firearms.
One of the four seized firearms has been manufactured in Odisha, the CP said, adding, they are investigating whether the duo was linked to any interstate firearms racket.
He said Swain is a hardcore criminal and involved in four cases of arms dealing and six other criminal cases at different places in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Jajpur while Panda, who is a builder, is implicated in one case of arms dealing registered at the Madhupatna police station in Cuttack.
