Balangir, Aug 16
The State Crime Branch police, which was on the lookout for two accused allegedly involved in the Sarva Shiksha Abhijan (SSA) scam in Balangir district, heaved a sigh of relief as the duo surrendered in the Town Police here on Friday morning.
The two accused–Jethu Sahu and Doctor Sahu– working as accountant and cashier respectively in SSA department of Balangir, had allegedly misappropriated Rs 5 crore from the SSA account by forging the signatures of five former district project coordinators (DPC) since 2007. They surrendered today after the High Court rejected their anticipatory bail application.
The incident came to light on May 9 this year after the officials verified and found that no account had been opened at Allahabad Bank officially with the authentic signature of the DPC.
Following the incident, district collector Deboraj Mishra had requested the state government for a Crime Branch probe into the scam.
