Bhubaneswar, May 21:
An earthquake of moderate intensity shook almost the whole of eastern India, including Odisha, on Wednesday night.
The earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 21 hours 52 minutes IST with its epicentre at Lat. 18.3 degree North and Long. 87.9 degree East in Bay of Bengal about 310 Kms Southeast of Seismological Observatory, Bhubaneswar, the meteorological centre here said.
Tremors were also felt in Gaya in Bihar, Ranchi and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam and Chennai, reports reaching here said.
In Bhubaneswar, the tremors lasted barely a few seconds. Frightened citizens were seen rushing out of their homes after feeling the tremors inside. It refreshed memories of the December 24, 2004 tsunami that devastated large parts of coastal India.
Tremors were also felt in Keonjhar, Baripada, Balasore, Puri and Rourkela, reports reaching here said.
This time, however, no tsunami alert has been sounded, sources said.
