Tragic: Lightning kills 3, injures 2 during hockey match in Odisha

Sundergarh: In a tragic incident, three hockey players, including two siblings, were killed and two seriously injured due to lightning strikes this evening in the district.

The deceased have been identified as Sumant Gauda, Sushant Gauda and Rabi Narayan Danti.

The incident took place at Sankarabahal village under Talsara police station where some youths were playing a hockey match.

According to reports, the hockey players were taking rest under a tree when the lightning coupled with thundershowers lashed the village forcing to stop the match. However, the lightning struck the trio leaving them dead on the spot.

The injured players were taken to Sundergarh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in critical condition.  Bodies of the deceased persons also taken to the hospital for postmortem.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on the village.

In a similar incident, six youths were killed in a lightning strike during a cricket match in the Jaripada panchayat area of Khurda district in March, 2015.
