A trader succumbed to the bullet injuries at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela on Monday afternoon after two miscreants fired at him from point black range near Sagjodi area under Hatibari police station limits in Odisha’s Sundargarh district in the morning.
Sources said, the deceased identified as Sitaram Sahoo (62), a native of Gopapur village under Nuagaon block of the district, had gone to a nearby village market at about 11 AM. On the way to his home, he was intercepted by two bike-borne miscreants who suddenly opened fire at him and fled the area.
Following the incident, the locals rushed to the spot and admitted him to the IGH.
Sahoo, who sustained bullet injuries on his right shoulder and left thigh, succumbed to his injuries at about 5.30 PM.
Talking to the media, Biramitrapur SDPO A Rana said the police have sealed areas bordering Jharkhand and launched a massive manhunt to nab the miscreants.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the bike used by the miscreants had the number plate of Jharkhand. After committing the crime, the duo might have fled to Jharkhand.
Apart from this, there was a long-standing dispute among the family members of the deceased over property matters, following which Sahoo had received death threat, police said.
