Palpable tension prevails in Odisha’s port town Paradip as protesting workers of Essar Steel Limited here continue with their sit-in dharna in front of the main gate of the plant blocking entry to the factory premises.
The protesting workers are demanding payment of arrears, hike in wages and protesting against the arrest of seven of their fellow workers by the police yesterday, reports said.
While entry of vehicles into the plant premises due to the agitation has come to a complete halt, work inside the plant premises has been affected.
Two platoons of policemen have been deployed at the plant site to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident from taking place.
Notably, employees of the steel plant were on a a sit-in dharna in front of the main gate of Essar Steel Limited were on a dharna pressing for fulfillment of their demands which included payment of pending salary of last five months and revision in the pay structure.
However, the protest turned violent as a mob-police clash ensued when cops tried to free the area of protesters who had reportedly locked the main gate of the company.
The mob vandalized the police van and went berserk. A police official was injured in the clash while seven agitators were arrested for the violence and attack on policemen.
