Korei (Jajpur), Jan 6:
Angry villagers of Uparagada village of Talagada panchayat under Korei police limits on Sunday handed over a youth to the police for attempting to rape a minor girl of the same village, who committed suicide out of shame after the incident.
The local police after taking the accused Rajan Bhoi (20) into custody, sent the body of the deceased for post mortem.
The incident has sparked off tension in the area.
According to police, Rajan allegedly waylaid the deceased Rashmita Nayak (17) a student of Class X in the local high school and daughter of Laxmidhar Nayak while she was returning home on Sunday morning after taking a bath at the nearby nullah and attempted to rape her.
Rashmita resisted the move and raised alarm following which Kalindi Bhoi, an old man of the village rushed to the spot and tried to restrain Rajan. He also shouted for help from other villagers. Scared, Rajan left the girl alone and fled the spot.
Unable to bear the trauma and sense of shame, Rashmita ended her life by hanging herself . She was a meritorious student and was a darling of the village.
The incident took place when the parents of the girl had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood.
As the news of the attempted rape and the girl’s suicide spread in the village, angry villagers caught hold of Rajan and tied him to a tree after a severe thrashing.
Following information, a team of Korei police rushed to the spot and arrested the accused and sent the body for post mortem.
