Puri: In a bid to bring reforms in system, Jagannath temple administration imposed restriction on sale of Tanka Torani and Rabidi at Ananda Bazar of the shrine.
A notice has been issued by Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) prohibiting sale of Tanka Torani (mixture of curd, water rice, lemon leaves and green chilly) and Rabidi (Indian dessert made from milk).
The ban order remained in force from Friday. The temple authorities will carry out raid Ananda Bazar (market place of Mahaprasad) from today.
Besides, the SJTA also restricted selling of Mahaprasad on road and on premises of temple premises. It also directed that any minor could not be engaged in selling Abadha (prasad) on premises of the temple.
The temple administration also prohibited entry of youths who help in selling Abadha of different suara servitors at Ananda Bazar. The entry of persons who ask for money from devotees was also prohibited on the premises of Mahaprasad selling market.
According to reports, a squad formed by the temple administration earlier will raid Ananda Bazar continuously. Stringent action will be taken against the person in violation of the order.
However, the new rule by the temple administration disappoints the servitors in the temple.
“Tanka Torani is associated with the feelings of a devotee. It should not be banned in the temple. It would have been appropriate step if the quality of Tanka Torani was maintained. The Tanka Torani prepared by the suaras and mahasuaras should be properly examined before sale. The temple administration should reconsider its decision. The quality of Tanka Torani needs to be tested. The suaras and mahasuaras should be allowed to sell Tanka Torani at Aananda Bazar. The devotees’ sentiments will be hurt with ban of Tanka Torani inside the temple,” said servitor Binayak Dasmohapatra.
“We should not engage child labour for selling Mahaprasad inside the temple. Some Brahmins who are asking for money from devotees, are found in indiscipline activities. Instead of prohibiting their entry to the temple premises, they should be allotted a place to sit and be engaged in their work,” he added.
Notably, there is no rule in the temple on sale of Tanka Torani and Rabidi at Ananda Bazar. Around 20-25 persons are now selling Tanka Torani there following the sale began by one person in the temple.
Similarly, there is no connection between Rabidi and Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath. With sale of these items, the reputation of Ananda Bazar (Pleasure mart of temple) is also affected.
