Nayagarh, Oct 9:
Authorities of Nayagarh Autonomous College here announced cancellation of the election to its students’ union following violent clash between two groups of students today. The authorities later in the day declared closure of the college sine die.
According to reports, two groups of students clashed among themselves inside the college campus today. As the unrest among the students turned violent, the college authorities have cancelled the polls to the students’ union and declared sine die closure of the college.
As palpable tension prevailed, police forces have been deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident in the college campus and maintain law and order there, the reports said.
Sources said widespread resentment was prevailing in the college since the day of filing of nomination papers over college authorities allegedly allowing some ineligible candidates to contest in the election.
One of the student groups alleged that these candidates lacked requisite percentage of attendance in order to be eligible to file nominations for the posts in the union as per guidelines of the Lyngdoh Commission. The commission prescribes for minimum 75% attendance for candidates to be eligible to contest student union elections, they pointed out.
The college principal, however, sought to explain that since somebody had tampered with the attendance register, he had allowed all candidates to participate in the polls in conformity with the guidelines.
But the aggrieved group refused to buy this argument and the resentment flared up today with one group attacking the other over a minor squabble leading to the cancellation of the polls, sources said.
