Bhubaneswar, Jul 18:
An FIR was lodged against the school teachers of Somana Pradhan Primary School under Balipatana Police limits on the outskirts of Odisha capital yesterday as an eight year old class-III student named Pankajini Pradhan breathed her last due to snakebite in the classroom.
As per her father Kabindra Pradhan, the snake came out of the drain and bit the right hand of the kid. The teachers paid no attention to it, even though she was in pain and complained of the incident to her teachers.
Her family was informed at about noon after she started experiencing reeling in the head. Her uncle picked her up from the school and she was admitted to Pipli community health centre in a serious condition. Later, she was shifted to Capital Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
The situation remained tense in the village and her father lodged a complaint in the Balipatna Police Station at about 8 PM yesterday blaming the teachers for negligence.
“Both the teachers were gossiping in the office instead of being in the classroom. That is why they were unable to know of the snakebite on time. Even though my daughter told them about the incident, neither did they call me up or take her to the hospital. My daughter died because of their negligence,” said Pankaj.
The school authorities, however, refuted the charges of negligence.
“The snake bit the student while I was teaching in the classroom. We had informed her family right away and also carried out the first aid from our side. Her uncle reached the school and picked her up later. We ourselves had also visited the hospital,” said Headmistress of the School Bidulata Nayak.
Block Chairman Sashi Bhusan Patra assured an investigation and action on the issue.
“After receiving the complaint, we have asked the Block Education Officer (BEO) to investigate the incident. An official investigation would be carried out on Monday and action will be taken against the person if found guilty,” said Patra.
