A campaign rally was organized to demand Bharat Ratna for hockey wizard Dhayn Chand here on Wednesday.
International sports icons Padmashree Dilip Tirkey, Olympian Anuradha Biswal, former Indian Captain Shradhanjali Samantray, former Indian coach, international basketball player AN Routray and Martial Art Guru Hari Prasad Pattnaik were among a galaxy of sportspersons who participated in the rally.
Before the start of the rally, the eminent sportspersons spoke briefly and said vociferously demanded the conferment of the the highest civilian award of the nation on late Maj. Dhyan Chand posthumously in recognition of his unique and commendable contribution to the game of hockey.
About 500 sportspersons drawn from various disciplines like Football, Basketball, Kabaddi, Athletic, Rugby, Karate etc participated in the rally. Among others Everestor Ganesh Jena, Rugby Association secretary Upendra Mohanty, Cine star Somesh Mohanty, Social activists Dr Dilip Srichandan, BAA Secy. Dr. SR Parija, Aravinda Nath Mitra, Brahma Mishra, OMA Secy. Santosh Dash, Football Coach Nanda Kishore Pattnaik and many other eminent sports person were present.
The rally stared from Kalinga Stadium and terminated at Commissionerate Police Building. A memorandum signed by about 1200 sports persons and sports lovers will be submitted by a group of sports person led by Dilip Tirkey to the Chief Minister for onward transmission to Govt Of India to consider the demand of Bharat Ratna to late Dhyan Chand.
Former Hockey Player and Sports administrator Ashok Mohanty and Sports Physio Dr. Mukti Prasad Dash organized the rally on behalf of all the sports lovers of the city.
