Six persons went missing while one person was rescued after a boat in which they were ferrying capsized in the Patali river near the river bank in Padua village in Odisha’s Koraput district this afternoon.
The six missing persons are from Pitalapada village under Nandapur block.
According to reports, the victims had gone to the weekly haat at Musimput in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh in the morning hours. While on the way to Paraja Badapada ghat, tragedy struck the home-bound villagers when the boatman lost control of the boat that capsized near the river bank near Padua village.
While six villagers— Bada Khemundu, Arjun Khemundu, Bimala Khemundu, Radha Khila, Athama Khemundu and Basu Pangi— drowned, one of them, identified as Nagesh Khemundu, was rescued by some villagers of Padua who were present near the river bank when the incident took place.
Following information, a fire brigade team from Malkangiri rushed to the spot.
Efforts were on to trace out the missing villagers till the reports last came in.
