Bhubaneswar, Feb 24:
Acting on a tip off, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate police, along with personnel of the Capital police station, conducted a surprise raid at a place opposite Nirman Soudh near the Directors’ building (Natal) here and arrested six gamblers with cash amounting to Rs 42,435 on Monday. Seven mobile phones were also seized from them, police said.
The accused were booked under relevant sections of the Gambling Act, police said adding they were forwarded to the local court today.
Sources claimed that the six arrested were employees of the state government. However, Capital police denied the claim saying only one of the six arrested was a retired government official while the others were all street vendors. But it failed to explain how the five street vendors got such large amounts of cash to gamble on.
