The incident occurred after he was shifted from surgery ward to orthopedics for plastering at about 12:45 this afternoon.

Even though he was escorted by five police men including an ASI of Odisha Police; he managed to flee at an opportune moment.

“The patient was brought here for plastering. I asked him and his attendant to wait outside until his number comes. The patient wanted to throw up and went outside. Later he was found to be absent when his turn came,” said an attendant of surgery ward.

Police, on the other hand, didn’t provide any detail of the escape. They, however, informed that the area has been cordoned off and a search operation has been launched to nab him again.

Police Commissioner YB Khurania said that a special team has been formed to conduct raids at various places and Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi would investigate the circumstances under which Patu managed to escape.

Earlier, he had escaped from police custody while undergoing treatment in Capital Hospital too.

Notably, he had been arrested from Khandagiri area of Bhubaneswar on late March 2 night following a shootout with the police. He had sustained injury in the left ankle in the encounter and had been shifted to Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital after first aid in Capital Hospital.

Patu has as many as 17 cases against him in various police stations of Puri, Khurda and Commissionerate Police out of which seven are in Bhubaneswar.

Even though he had been arrested earlier for chain snatching in Bhubaneswar and was stationed in Jharapada jail, he escaped from police custody while undergoing treatment in Capital Hospital.
