Bhubaneswar, Aug 17

Taking cognizance of media reports on alleged violation of model code of conduct by Puri municipality, state election commissioner Ajit Tripahty today asked the Puri district magistrate to submit a report immediately on whether the model code of conduct was violated or not.

The Puri municipality launched the Harischandra Yojana on Thursday even though the model code of conduct is in force for the urban elections scheduled to be held on September 19.

Paragraph-3 of chapter IV of model code of conduct prohibits starting of a new work even it was decided earlier, during the period when the code of conduct is in force.

The commission has sought information on the date and place of the launch and the source of funding of the Yojana in Puri municipality. Besides, it has also asked for details on the ceremony held for the launch of the scheme and names of those present.
