Vigilance department officials today arrested a retired Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer from Khandagiri area on charges of siphoning off government funds to the tune of Rs 1 crore.
The retired OAS officer identified as Rama Chandra Mohanty was in hiding since long and was apprehended by the sleuths from a house in the city.
Mohanty who was working as the land acquisition officer of Khurda district in 2008-2009 has allegedly embezzled government funds to the tune of Rs 1crore which was meant for payment of compensation to the land losers whose lands were acquired for the bird sanctuary at Nandankanan. Notably, about 50 acres of land was acquired for the purpose in 2008-2009.
The Vigilance had earlier arrested one more person in connection with the case. Mohanty will be forwarded to court later in the day, Vigilance department sources said.
