Registration of Cog cases increases, murder declines in Odisha’s twin city

Bhubaneswar: Total registration of cognizable cases increased in 2017 as compared to previous years in twin city Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

According to annual crime statistics of Police Commissionerate Bhubaneswar-Cuttack for 2017, a total of 11,238 cognizable crimes including excise cases were registered in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in the year 2017 whereas the number was 10,774 in 2016, 10,906 in 2015, 9229 in 2014 and 9109 in 2013.

The statistics showed that the number of cognizable cases has increased by 464 last year as compared to 2016. While the number of cognizable cases was 7139 (increased by 173) in Bhubaneswar, it was 4099 (increased by 291) in Cuttack in 2017.

However, the murder cases registered both in Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD) and Cuttack UPD has declined last year.

As per the statistics, the percentage of true cases registered was 49% in the twin city. While 27% true cases were registered in Bhubaneswar, the percentage in Cuttack was 22% in 2017. The total percentage was 73% in 2016, 63% in 2015, 76% in 2014 and 81% in 2013.

Similarly, the registration of dacoity cases decreased in Bhubaneswar UPD over previous years, whereas it recorded increase in Cuttack UPD. Police intercepted 13 and 9 dacoity gangs in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack respectively during the year foiling the dacoity bid.

The percentage of recovery of stolen property in dacoity cases recorded increase with 84.5% in Bhubaneswar UPD, while the percentage of recovery recorded decrease with 35.5% in Cuttack UPD as compared to previous year.

A total of 193 robbery cases were registered in Bhubaneswar, while it was 68 in Cuttack last year. The crime under head robbery has decreased by 8 in Bhubaneswar, whereas it recorded marginal increase by 15 in Cuttack as compared to previous year. Total 325 criminals were arrested under robbery crime in 2017 as against arrest of 284 criminals in previous year.

According to the annual statistics, the registration of burglary cases was recorded with 364 in 2017, where as the number was 358 in 2016. A total of 2155 theft cases was registered in both UPDs in 2017 as compared to 1905 in 2016. The total registration of swindling cases was 797 in 2017 as against 751 in 2016. The rape cases were 181, an increase by 43, in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

However, the crime under the head rioting recorded substantial decrease with 122 over previous year’s 158 in both the UPDs. Total 433 accused were arrested on charges of provoking riots in 2017 as against arrest of 427 in previous year.
