Rayagada, Aug 22
The Rayagada bandh call given by the Sachetan Nagarik Manch (SNM) demanding restoration of law and order in the town evoked overwhelming response on Wednesday.
Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear as SNM members squatted on the proposed Ranchi-Vijayawada Highway.
All petrol pumps, shops, schools and other educational institutions, government offices and banks in the town were closed. Regular passenger buses, auto-rickshaws and rickshaws and other vehicles remained off roads.
Talking to media persons, SNM convener Prof Niranjan Buxipatra said the Manch has demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the theft of idols from the Radhakanta Temple, contain the increasing house burglary, bike lifting and theft from several shops and pick-pocketing in the town, which have taken place in the last few months.
Though the district collector had requested the Manch to refrain from road blockade, the latter had no choice as the district administration has\d failed to take prompt action to curb such anti-social activities in the area, he said.
