Girl students of Ravenshaw University putting up outside the campus due to limited hostel rooms have reasons to celebrate as the varsity will soon be adding two more hostels for girls to the existing four.
Varsity authorities said they are planning to complete construction work of a girls’ hostel, which would accommodate 384 girls, in October. Besides, the government has approved another hostel for SC/ST girls.
“The SC/ST department has agreed to set up a hostel with a capacity to accommodate 300 inmates at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore. We have received a letter from the SC/ST development department on this matter”, said the official.
Sources said more than 1,000 girls are forced to stay outside the campus due to limited accommodation available in the campus. The four existing girls’ hostels have a combined of 1200 seats.
More hostels for girl students will be needed in the coming years as the number of girl students has been increasing in the varsity over the years. At present, girls constitute 65% of the total students in the university, said a senior official of the varsity.
Besides the girls’ hostels, the Higher Education department has allotted Rs 12 crore towards infrastructure development of the varsity. A convention hall, which can seat 1,200 people, will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore, the official said.
