The rape attempt victim from Podamari in Odisha’s Ganjam district who was admitted to the MKCG Medical College & Hospital (MKCGMC&H) with 95 percent burns today succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
The 30-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by another villager after a failed rape attempt yesterday night.
The accused Bhima Gouda (40) allegedly barged in and tried to rape the woman last night while she was alone in her house, police said.
Police said Bhima, the accused, who is a milkman allegedly set the woman afire after dousing her with kerosene as she strongly resisted his attempt to rape her.
Villagers on rescuing the woman rushed her to MKCGMC&H here. Attending doctors at the MKCGMC&H said the woman who was admitted with 95 percent burns on her body died while undergoing treatment.
Police has detained the accused and has started its investigation in the matter on the basis of an FIR lodged by the deceased’s brother-in-law, police said adding that they are waiting for the post-mortem report of the victim to further proceed in the case.
