The Government Railway Police (GRP) rescued eight women from Hirakhand Express in Odisha’s Rayagada district today and detained a lady broker.
Talking to OST, Rayagada GRP Inspector Suresh Chandra Nayak said the police, acting on a tip-off, rescued the eight young women from Bhawanipatna-Bhubaneswar Link Express at Rayagada railway station and detained a lady broker identified as Saraswati Jena. However, another lady broker managed to escape, he said.
Nayak said the eight women, hailing from Junagarh area in Kalahandi district, later told the police that the two lady brokers had brought them with a promise to provide them training on tailoring and a decent job in Bhubaneswar. But as they came to know that they were heading for Tamil Nadu, they protested and informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.
“Following information, we rescued the women from the train after it arrived at Rayagada railway station”, he said, adding that the rescued women were later taken to a short stay home of Sneha, a local NGO.
