Over a hundred people sustained injuries after a magnitude- 5.8 quake hit the Odisha’s capital city on Wednesday, reports said.
According to sources, at least 70 injury cases were reported at the Capital Hospital here and 20 of them, who had sustained serious injuries, were referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack.
35 injury cases were reported at the Sum Hospital, while 7 injured persons were found at the Sparsh hospital in Saheed Nagar.
The Commissionerate Police sources said at least 20 apartments in the city have developed cracks as a consequence of the tremor.
Most of the victims sustained injuries reportedly as they jumped from the terrace out of panic after they felt the tremor. These people were sleeping on the terraces of their houses due to the intense heat condition here.
The city had recorded 44.2 degree today, the highest temperature this summer.
The injured are mostly from Balianta, Rasulgarh, Bomikhal and Nayapalli areas of the city, sources said. Some of them, who were known heart patients, complained of severe chest pain.
Reports said several mud houses have collapsed in Baleswar. An unconfirmed report said one person has been killed in Belagaon nearPolsara in Ganjam .
There are also reports that about 50 people received minor injuries in Jagatsinghpur district.
” We are in the process of collecting information on injuries and damages to houses and will be able to come up with details,” a senior official at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office told OST.
